By 1983 Switzerland was no longer considered the world’s leading country in the production of watches, the number of pieces manufactured in Switzerland fell from 43% to less than 15% between 1977-1983. This was a consequence of the ‘Quartz Revolution’ that began in 1969 with the release of the Seiko Astron, which was the first watch use mechanisms quartz. This presented itself a threat to the traditional methods of watchmaking.
Swatch’s story began in 1983 with Nicholas Hayek’s merger of Switzerland’s two largest watch producers at the time, ASUAG and SSIH. Hayek proposed that his product would undergo a huge transition: it would be mass produced, more affordable, powered by a quartz battery and marketed as a fashion watch. Each watch was to be made entirely out of plastic and to be made up of just 51 parts. Swatch took its name from the idea that it was a ‘second watch’, a watch that was to be considered a casual fashion statement.
Swatch has since established itself a master of collaborations, as they have engaged with artists, musicians, sports stars, brands and everything in-between. Swatch were pioneers in producing limited edition/small quantity products which have become highly collectable.
By 1992, Swatch had produced its 10 millionth watch and to this day it continues to diversify and innovate. Swatch’s latest development are their Big Bold Bioceramic models, which are world first! This innovation presents a new-era of sustainability and design as it is a mix of ceramic and bio-sourced plastic.
