Luminox continues to do its part towards a more sustainable future.
Today, everyone has to do their part to make the world a better, and more sustainable, place to live. For Luminox, this has meant revamping its production processes, as well as partnering with a Swiss company #tide to collect plastic and waste from the ocean and using those materials to create the #tide series of watches.
On five islands in the Andaman Sea off the coast of Thailand, local fishermen are being trained and paid to gather and sort plastic waste. This material is registered, washed, shredded and turned into a granular material that can be injected or spun into a yarn. The result is #tide ocean material®.

The story behind Luminox watches as a brand is one of innovation, precision, and resilience. Luminox was founded in 1989 by Barry Cohen, a visionary entrepreneur and watch industry veteran, along with his business partner Richard Timbo. The name "Luminox" is derived from the Latin words "lumi" (light) and "nox" (night), which allude to the watches' signature feature: their exceptional luminosity in low-light conditions.
The brand's inception was inspired by a request from the United States Navy SEALs (Sea, Air, Land) Special Warfare Command. The Navy SEALs needed rugged and reliable timepieces that could withstand the harsh conditions of their missions, particularly those that often took place in low-light or no-light environments. Traditional luminous watches often required an external light source to recharge their glow, which was not always practical during covert operations.
This challenge led Luminox to develop their revolutionary illumination technology, which is based on tiny, self-powered gas-filled capsules called "borosilicate glass microspheres." These capsules are installed on the watch hands and markers, providing a constant glow that requires no external light source or battery. This unique illumination system is known as the "Luminox Light Technology" (LLT) and has become the hallmark of Luminox watches.
With their groundbreaking LLT, Luminox watches gained immense popularity among elite military units, law enforcement, and other professionals who require precise timekeeping and unparalleled visibility in the dark. The Luminox brand quickly became synonymous with ruggedness, durability, and dependability, appealing to adventurers, explorers, and outdoor enthusiasts worldwide.
