Introduction:

2021 marks the 140th anniversary of Seiko’s birth, the company was founded by Kintaro Hattori in Tokyo, Japan. Hattori founded the company when he was just 21 years old, having first began working as a clockmaker apprentice at the age of 13. The creation of Seiko coincided with the dawning of a new-era of Japanese made clocks and watches, which would begin to the set new, unprecedented standards of watchmaking. During Hattori’s fifty years at the helm of the company, Seiko became the leading watch making company in Japan, developing its own unique design and production facilities. This achievement was a direct result of his single-minded vision that Seiko should always be “one step ahead of the rest”.

In celebration of their 140th anniversary Seiko have released a collection of four limited edition watches that, together, epitomise the range of Seiko’s watchmaking expertise. The collection consists of a model from each of Seiko’s four representative collections: Prospex, Presage, Astron and Seiko 5.

Concept:

Each model from the collection offers a combination of a silvery-white dial and touches of blue that capture the scene of a blue sky piercing through the clouds above. Seiko have stated that the concept behind the aesthetics is ‘Just as if sunlight spreads its glow throughout the sky, the new creations inspire us to move toward a brighter future.’ Seiko’s desire to be continuously innovative and continue to push boundaries is an integral reason that the company has enjoyed such preeminent levels of success over its 140 year history.
